Refestramus

REFESTRAMUS (re-fes-TRA-mus) is a Chicago-based progressive hard rock project led by songwriter and drummer Derek Ferguson. The name - coined by Ferguson's mother - means “rearrange,” and the music lives up to it: a restless recombination of classic prog ambition, cinematic storytelling, Slavic and Latin folk traditions, and modern hard rock energy. Ferguson describes the sound as “Heartland Grit” - modern prog with a classic feel. Fans have dubbed them “The Punks of Prog” for their refusal to fit any single sub-genre.

The band's newest members, bassist/vocalist Jan Christiana and keyboardist/vocalist Dyanne Potter Voegtlin, joined for the third album, Morri's Rock Boutique, and have had a huge impact on the overall sound. In their own right, the pair lead the band Octarine Sky (octarinesky.com), featuring the legendary Simon Phillips (Toto, The Who) on drums.

Founded in May 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdowns, REFESTRAMUS began as a border-crossing collaboration of musicians recruited from around the world and grew into a full band. Three albums followed, all produced by Ian Beabout (Colouratura): the genre-bending debut Decoupage (2021), Intouríst (Melodic Revolution Records, 2024), and Morri's Rock Boutique (Melodic Revolution Records, 2026), a surreal desert-western dreamscape featuring David Jackson (Van der Graaf Generator), Joe Deninzon (Kansas/Stratospheerius), Rick Witkowski (Crack the Sky), and members of Octarine Sky.

The band made its European debut in November 2025 at the HRH Prog 15 Festival in Great Yarmouth, UK, with David Jackson joining them on saxophone - a set Festivals For All called “a superb Chicago band… almost Gong-esque.” The band's sound leans on vintage rock hardware - Mellotron, Hammond organ, distorted guitars - while the lyrics draw on Russian literature, film noir, and Orthodox Christian theology. For fans of Kansas, Styx, Van der Graaf Generator, Crack the Sky, and Flying Colors.
